Contemporary African Sculptures

In the 19th century, a group of colonists discovered a few of the most sophisticated bronze sculptures – called the Benin Bronzes. In the recent times, African sculptures have been exploded in the international art market. As a matter of fact, some of the earliest sculptures were discovered in500BC in the city of Nook, Nigeria. African statues are pieces of art that engender strong and touching responses, involving mysticism and imagination.

Prehistoric Benin Bronzes are extremely famous across the world and they are inspired by the royal patronage of Africa. In addition, the artists carved masks, figurines and busts from a variety of materials including ivory, ebony, terracotta, hardwoods and ceramics. However, as far as the affordable statues of sale are concerned, a majority of them are made out of durable materials such as wood.

African sculptures, over the centuries, have been dominated by human forms that symbolise the living as well as the dead. The spirits of drummers, chiefs, hunters and dancers are articulated in a three dimensional way. On the other hand, the ancient Bronze sculptures were not restricted to the human form. At the moment, modern South African art still follows the course of ancient African sculpture. Bronze nudes, political heroes, angry leopards and fanciful figurines are some of the renowned works by contemporary African sculptors.
